Merle Haggard is one of country musics most iconic stars with hits like Mama Tried, Workin Man Blues and Okie from Muskogee. Now, Amazon Studios are looking to tell his story in an upcoming biopic according to entertainment website Deadline.
It is reported that the biopic will star Sam Rockwell as outlaw country singer. Rockwell whose credits include Moon, The Green Mile and the film he won an Oscar for Best Performance in a Supporting Role Three Billboards Outside Ebbing. It's also said that he would do his own singing in the film.
The as-yet-untitled film focuses on Haggard's "tumultuous rise from inmate who served three years at San Quentin — where he was among the prisoners who watched the first prison performance of Johnny Cash in a life-changing moment — to the clubs in Bakersfield hometown, to Capitol Records in Los Angeles to becoming what Kris Kristofferson called 'the greatest artist in American music history.'"
Haggards widow Theresa Haggard will write the script alongside Robin Bissell (Producer on The Hunger Games), who will also direct.
