Billy Ray Cyrus has released a new version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and we’ve got some questions. The achy-breaky icon has teamed up with Micki Free and Buck 22 (yes, his Achy Breaky 2 collaborator) for a slow-burning, synth-laced rendition of the classic Wizard of Oz ballad.

It’s dreamy. It’s earnest. It’s kind of trippy. And it has us wondering… hey Billy, you good?

On Instagram, Cyrus explained that the song holds deep meaning for him: “‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ has always represented more than just a melody to me... it’s a symbol of equal opportunity for all.” He shared that the cover is part of a project benefiting the National Museum of African American Music a very worthy cause, and one close to his heart.

Still, the accompanying teaser includes a misty green garden, soft-focus vibes, and in caption Cyrus shout-outs to Miley, Noah, Braison, Elizabeth Hurley, and D Man, it feels more like a dream sequence than a traditional release. “Thank you... for being the treasure at the end of my rainbow,” Cyrus writes, we’re not sure if we should be swooning or calling someone to check in.

Fans (and us too) flocked to the comment section to leave their opinions. User caylacc1 said “What the hellyraycyrus” another user Assleigh chimed in “legit thought this was a parody lmao” and Austin added “As long as you’re having fun, William”. Others like user Brittkitty Ann showed their support saying “These comments make me sad… I actually think this is the best he’s sounded in a while”.

Look, we love that he’s chasing beauty, equality, and all things rainbow-hued. But there’s something a little off-the-yellow-brick-road about this whole thing, and we’re just hoping he’s doing okay up there in Oz.

What do you think?
