It’s a big day for revered singer-songwriter Fanny Lumsden, who has just announced her new album Traditions, and a run of national tour dates.
Having first teased new music by way of the release of Difficult Woman back in June, Lumsden’s forthcoming fifth album is set to arrive on October 30th, as one of her most boldest records to date.
Across its 11 tracks, the heartfelt, intensely personal record sees a new side of Lumsden, who has found herself reckoning with the titular concept as time has passed.
“As I’ve got older, I’ve begun to realise the value and meaning that can come from traditions, however what I’m still learning is how to balance the ideas of who I am, with those traditions and that they are all allowed to change as we go,” she explains.
“I loved that Traditions brings up so much discussion for people. Traditions and families are messy. I can value the traditions of my family whilst also understanding that they were borne of a flawed system. There is more to traditions than being steadfast, I think I’m discovering the movement and change they need to survive.
“I am here now, trying to marry my autonomy and ambitions with my farming family’s traditions,” she adds. “Perhaps belonging is be found when traditions are alive, in traditions that grow – and maybe some need to be just left behind to move forward.”
Working with Steven Schram in the producer's chair, the album was in just nine days, recorded live as Lumsden approached each song with a sense of fear, but ultimately trust for her musical collaborator. On the topic of collaborators, the album also featured an appearance by none other than her former tourmate Paul Kelly, who appears on By The River.
While fans will have to wait a while to hear that one, the record’s announcement is paired with the release of new single Mother’s Eyes. Accompanied by banjo and pedal steel, it’s a rumination on the matriarchal bloodline as it eschews mind being paid to social pressures surrounding ageing and aesthetics.
“This song is a love letter to myself ultimately that, you’re going to question everything and your age but, in the end, when you look in the mirror it’s your mother’s eyes looking back and that can be enough”,” Lumsden explains.
With the record arriving on October 30th, Lumsden will be hitting the road on a national tour, beginning with an album launch show on October 31st in Tooma, NSW.
Preceded by a batch of festival dates throughout August and October, Lumsden will be heading around New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland throughout the majority of November, with tickets to these dates launching on Friday, August 7th, with a pre-sale commencing on Wednesday, August 5th.
