Country fans love a good plot twist and over the weekend, Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert might have just delivered one.
What started as a few seemingly playful Instagram Stories quickly turned into collaboration speculation, with both artists referencing their long rumoured history and tagging each other in posts that had fans reading between the lines.
The social media exchange referenced past tension between the two Texan stars, something fans have whispered about for years.
But instead of drama, the tone felt more like the possibility of the start of something new.
At one point, Musgraves shared a clip referencing Lambert with a caption that appeared to acknowledge past shade. Musgraves wrote “you knew I’d said some things about you”, while Lambert responded with her own cheeky Story: “Well I’ve done my fair share of sh*t talkin too.” The back and forth had fans immediately wondering whether the pair were setting the stage for a long overdue collaboration.
Of course, the Lambert connection runs deeper than just Instagram banter. Musgraves co-wrote Lambert’s fiery 2013 hit Mama's Broken Heart, a track that went on to become one of Lambert’s signature songs.
There are rumours circulating that Musgraves didn’t want to give the song up but felt pressured to do so. This is unconfirmed though.
The timing is perfect too.
Musgraves has been quietly teasing a new musical era online, including a mysterious new song titled Dry Spell. The track is expected to drop mid week, with many fans predicting a Wednesday release after snippets began circulating online.
The teased lyrics already have people hooked, including lines like:
“It's been real long
335 days
And the last time
It wasn't good anyway
I’m so lonely
Lonely with a capital “H”
If you know what I mean
I’ve been sitting on the washing machine.”
And another with:
“Ain't nobody's tool up in my shed
Ain't nobody's boots under my bed
Ain't nobody's truck up in my drive
For a late night call, for a real good time
Ain't no new notches on my belt
And I'm tired of keeping my hands to myself
911, it's officially a cry for help
Y'all, I'm going through a dry spell, yup”
While we’re not quite sure Dry Spell is going to be the track Lambert features on, we do think it’s potentially not that far away.,
Nothing has been confirmed - but if Musgraves’ new era really is arriving this week, fans will be watching closely. And if Lambert suddenly appears on the credits, the internet is absolutely going to lose its mind.
