Australian country rocker Josh Setterfield is launching a double shot of new music to cap off the year, unveiling a reimagined take on Simple Plan’s 2000s anthem Perfect out today, followed by his fierce new original single Unapologetic on November 21. The two tracks introduce a fresh chapter for Setterfield, one that pushes the boundaries of modern country while staying true to his roots.
First up, Perfect serves as a full circle moment for Setterfield, who cut his teeth in the pop punk world before breaking into country music. “This version of Perfect is my tribute to the band that made me the person and artist I am today,” says Setterfield. “At one of my lowest points earlier this year, I asked the universe for a sign… and it was delivered through this band again.”
Produced by Nashville producer Jonathan Roach (LOCASH, Lakeview, Austin Snell) with Simple Plan’s official blessing, Setterfield’s version fuses pop punk nostalgia with his country rock sound creating a crossover that feels both familiar and totally brand new.
“I went to a Simple Plan concert earlier this year never expecting anything more than to see my favourite band,” Setterfield recalls. “Next thing I knew, I was having a few drinks with them; the same band that made younger me pick up a guitar. Then I ended up in Nashville, presented with the same opportunity on the other side of the world. Being in Nashville with SP was like my two worlds colliding. I took this as the sign to keep going which led me to recording and releasing something I’d always wanted to do. I’ve never felt more excited about the future.”
With more than 8.5 million streams, and nominations for Breakthrough Artist and Male Artist of the Year at the Countrytown Awards, Setterfield has built his reputation on authenticity and energy.
On November 21, Setterfield will unveil Unapologetic, a statement track that defines his new direction. “Unapologetic is about being yourself and taking your own path - not caring what other people are doing around you,” he explains. “It’s all the things that are me.”
Recorded between Anvil Mixing Co. and Saxby Studios Nashville, the song was produced by Jonathan Roach and features Grady Saxman (Jelly Roll, Luke Combs, Dustin Lynch) on drums. Sure enough the result was a straight up blend of country storytelling and rock intensity that refuses to play it safe, which is the perfect way to describe Setterfield.
Two songs, one message: Josh Setterfield isn’t following the rules, he’s rewriting them.
