Kasey Chambers claimed Best Country Album at last night’s ARIA Awards for her latest record Backbone. The win marks her 15th ARIA and further reinforced her status as a country music powerhouse.
Although she couldn’t attend the ceremony in person, the award was presented by US country star Kacey Musgraves, who is in Australia on a headlining tour for her new album Deeper Well.
Chambers accepted the award via a pre-recorded video, from her screen appearance she dedicated the win to her band, family and managers and reinforced that Backbone “is the soundtrack to my entire life.”
Backbone is Chambers’ 13th studio album and became an instant favourite for both fans and critics, blending her signature introspective songwriting with reflections on identity, life, and resilience.
Released in 2024, it debuted in the top 10 on the ARIA Albums Chart, a reminder that even after decades in the game Chambers still delivers. The album features hit songs The Divorce Song featuring Chamber’ ex-husband Shane Nicholson, A Love Like Springsteen and title track Backbone (The Desert Child).
It’s clear that Chambers continues to push boundaries in country music, blending traditional sounds with contemporary ones, and with Backbone she’s connecting with a new generation of listeners whilst staying true to the storytelling that defined her career.
Her ARIA track record is impressive, with now 15 ARIA Award wins under her belt, Chambers is the most awarded country artist in ARIA history. Add to that her induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2018, it’s clear Chambers’ impact on Australian music is iconic.
Other nominees for Best Country Album on the night included first time nominees Dylan Wright with Half A World Away, Imogen Clark with Choking On Fuel and Taylor Moss with Firecracker. Keith Urban a four-time ARIA Award winner, was also nominated for his album HIGH.
