Australian country artist Kirsty Lee Akers has had an eventful and frightening start to her US tour, after her vehicle caught fire while driving on an interstate. Sharing the incident on her social media, Akers revealed that she, her husband Jesse Anderson and guitarist Dan Ebbels were en route to a show when the terrifying event unfolded.
“So we’re causing a traffic jam, we’ve just broken down on the interstate, our brakes were literally on fire, literally on fire, someone pulled over and luckily had a fire extinguisher” Akers shared whilst husband Anderson poured a bottle of water over the back tire adding “they’re still f***ing smoking”
Whilst travelling down the interstate earlier this morning, the band van caught on fire unexpectedly in the middle of a highway. In a series of photos and videos posted to social media, the group were left standing by the roadside until the 12 year old vehicle was towed away.
“Literally caught on fire, that’s how hot we are” Akers, still able to make light of the serious situation appeared to be in good spirits, expressing gratitude that they were unharmed and able to walk away safely from what could have been a much more serious incident.
“Not quite the American road trip we had in mind,” Akers joked in the caption, though the stress of the situation was palpable. Fellow artists and fans flooded her comments with support, offering help, encouragement, and well-wishes as the band figures out next steps on the road.
Despite the dramatic detour, Akers confirmed that the show must go on, saying the experience has only made her more determined to finish the tour strong.
Known for her resilience and humour, Akers turned the ordeal into a reminder of the unpredictability of life on tour, especially in a foreign country. While she didn’t go into technical details about what caused the fire, it’s clear the incident won’t be stopping her from bringing her music to American audiences.
