When Sabrina Carpenter hit the stage at Austin City Limits during Weekend Two, fans expected pop bangers and lots of sass. What they probably weren’t expecting though, was an epic country crossover moment that was nothing short of iconic.
Midway through her set, Carpenter brought out The Chicks and the crowd absolutely went wild.
The Chicks joined Carpenter onstage for an almighty girl gang version of Wide Open Spaces, a 1998 The Chicks classic. The harmonies were flawless and the vibe was electric. The script was then flipped and the powerhouses dived into Carpenter’s hit Please Please Please, with The Chicks lending a raw and rootsy edge to the mega viral hit.
It’s not the first time Sabrina’s hinted at her country era, the weekend before she pulled Shania Twain onstage for That Don’t Impress Me Much, and on October 7, Carpenter made her Grand Ole Opry debut where one of her idols Sheryl Crow introduced her to the iconic stage.
“The brilliant @sherylcrow took the time to come out and introduce me and i am the biggest fan ever so that made my whole night alone if nothing else!!!” Carptener captioned her post after her debut performance.
Carpenter’s mixing with country music doesn’t feel gimmicky, it feels like a real nod to the genre and we hope to see more of it.
