Rockhampton singer Denvah has once again proven that country music is cool, getting fast-tracked to the Top 10 of Australian Idol alongside Dylan Wright – who Countrytown previously knew as one-half of Cronulla-based duo Sons Of Atticus.
Denvah was chosen by judges Kyle Sandilands, Marcia Hines and Amy Shark to excel to the Top 10 following her rendition of Dolly Parton’s 9 To 5. Yep, Denvah had previously put her own spin on non-country songs on the show, but last night (26 February), she let loose with a country classic.
Sharing a video of her performance on Instagram, she wrote in the caption: “Having a Dolly Parton-themed dance party on national television looks a little something like this…”
You can check out Denvah’s version of 9 To 5 below.
Denvah joins Dylan Wright as the second fast-tracked artist to be sent to the Top 10; the remaining contestants in the Top 12 will find out their fates tonight as two people get eliminated.
Wright has been popular with audiences and judges alike with his husky vocals, stage presence, song choices and humble dad-next-door relatability. Meanwhile, Denvah has won over viewers with her inimitable vocal style – which includes yodelling – energy and charisma. Wright was fast-tracked to the Top 10 after performing a slowed-down version of I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers.
In July 2022, Sad Songs by Sons Of Atticus was named Countrytown’s Song Of The Day. The track is a charming alt-country number that tells the story of a weary traveller whose only companions are the songs they sing to pass the time.
In October, Denvah won the Groundwater Country Music Festival’s KIX-Start competition. Reacting to her win, she wrote on her Instagram Stories that she was “screaming, crying, throwing up” before thanking KIX Country and Groundwater Music Festival for the opportunity. Following her win, she released the single Do Without.
In response to winning the competition, she added in a press release: “I’m so grateful and excited to have been chosen as the winner for Groundwater’s KIX-Start 2023 competition. The support from this competition is amazing and truly a blessing. The talent in the Top 10 was absolutely incredible, so I’m extremely honoured to have been selected.”
Australian Idol continues tonight at 7:30 pm AEDT on Channel 7 and 7plus. The series currently airs on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights.
