Happy 78th birthday to Dolly Parton, and happy Friday/weekend to her devoted fans, as she surprise-announced the release of the deluxe edition of her latest album, Rockstar, to commemorate the occasion.
Parton announced the addition of nine extra songs to the Rockstar tracklist via social media. “It’s my Birthday so I’m going to give you a present!” she wrote.
“I’m releasing four never released songs for my birthday, to go with the Rockstar album, and a few others that you may have heard before that were not on the album. I hope you enjoy them, and I hope you all have a happy birthday for me! LOL.”
The additional tracks find Dolly covering Billy Joel (The Entertainer), the Eurythmics classic Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), Pat Benatar (Hit Me With Your Best Shot), Simon & Garfunkel (Bridge Over Troubled Water) and Eddie Money’s Two Tickets To Paradise.
As well as the additional covers, Parton has shared new versions of four original tracks: a live version of Rockin’ It, the Sylvester Stallone-starring Stay Out Of My Bedroom, Mama Never Said, and a rendition of Jolene starring special guests Måneskin.
You can listen to Rockstar (Deluxe) wherever you stream your music.
Parton made her new album, Rockstar, after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November 2022. At the time, it was an honour she didn’t feel she deserved.
“Since I am in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I think [with] this album, I brought so many great artists back into this album that are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that deserve to be,” Parton explained in a recent The Music cover story interview.
She added, “I felt like I had to not only earn my keep, I tried to pay homage to a lot of these great artists that should be in there that are not and to the ones that are that I've gotten the opportunity to sing with.”
Upon announcing the release of Rockstar last year, Parton wrote in a statement on her website: “I am very honoured and privileged to have worked with some of the greatest iconic singers and musicians of all time and to be able to sing all the iconic songs throughout the album was a joy beyond measure.
“I hope everybody enjoys the album as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together!”
