Gosh dang, what a week it’s been for scorchin’ new country tunes! Not only were we blessed with spicy new releases from some of Australia’s finest up-and-comers, like Robbie Mortimer (who just dropped You Got That Love), Vixens Of Fall (who went all out with Wild River) and Lily Grace (whose new cut Give Me That is destined to be a hit), but the international heavyweights were out in full force: Megan Moroney came in guns blazing with her wicked new album Am I Okay?, for example, while Mitchell Tenpenny delivered another instant classic in The 3rd, and Orville Peck got his fans going absolutely mental with the Beck-assisted Death Valley High.
With all of that in mind, now seems like as good a time as any to remind you – or clue you in, if you didn’t know already – that we have our very own playlist dedicated to bringing you the best new music from all corners of the country music landscape, fittingly named Hot Country Hits Australia. We update it every Friday with more than a dozen of the brand new tracks we simply can’t get enough of, giving you the ultimate soundtrack to fuel your weekend.
You can listen to the Hot Country Hits Australia playlist on Spotify (here) and Apple Music (here) – and make sure to hit us up on Instagram or Facebook to let us know what songs you’ve been loving!
Here are just a few of our personal favourites from this week’s update to the playlist...
Megan Moroney – Am I Okay?
WHAT SHE SAYS: “There’s love and heartbreak and strength and loss and friendship and I hope these songs find a home with you. From the day I released Lucky, I was told over and over my sophomore album would be the hardest to write. I thought that might be true until I did what I’ve always done… I felt deeply and unapologetically and wrote songs when my heart needed it.
“During a crazy touring schedule, on 14 different occasions, I sat down and impulsively wrote exactly how I was feeling, whether it was right or wrong. Am I Okay? feels more honest and vulnerable than anything I’ve released, it’s because you guys have made me feel comfortable enough to do that. I can’t thank you enough for being on this journey with me, songwriting and making music really does light up my soul and I’m so grateful for each and every one of you.
“Thank you to my producer my co-writers, the musicians, my incredible team and everyone else involved in bringing this record to life so seamlessly. Simultaneously, Am I Okay? is where I’ve been, and where I want to go. By the time you get to the end of the album, a valid question would be, ‘OMG, is she okay?’ And I just want you to know that with you by my side, I’ll always be just fine.”
Robbie Mortimer – You Got That Love
WHAT HE SAYS: “To write, collaborate and connect with Wyatt [Durrette] – the writer of some of the biggest country songs of our generation – is one of the most rewarding things I have done in my music career to date. We both believe music is the best medicine and we love having the ability to share our feelings and passions through song. I recorded Blow The Speakers with Jared Adlam and that’s a very comfortable creative environment for me. Working with [MSquared] was new, and I was a little out of my comfort zone – but that was a good thing. They’re amazing and I’m absolutely stoked with the result.”
Dasha – Didn’t I
WHAT SHE SAYS: “Didn’t I is so nostalgic, there’s something about my past that intrigues me, including the men. In the writer’s room, I was referring to a time months and months ago when I was backsliding into the guy that Austin is about. It’s admitting like, ‘Oops here I am again, my bad,’ but I love how we made it lighthearted and fun.”
