This is not a drill – Home Free, Amy Sheppard and Travis Collins will take on one of Australia's most popular, beloved songs: Daryl Braithwaite’s The Horses (originally by Rickie Lee Jones). The music video will premiere on YouTube this Friday, 28 July.
“You guys [Home Free] gave me a master class during this collab. Was an honour being a student to it,” Travis Collins commented on Home Free’s announcement post on Facebook. “Can't wait for people to hear this!!”
In his own Facebook post, Collins added, “As a singer, I was floored when I first heard Home Free at CMC Rocks.. like, couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“So, when these guys invited me to collab on one of Australia's greatest and most popular songs ever - PLUS the opportunity to work with Amy Sheppard, who just kills - it was an absolute YES from me.” Amy Sheppard also said that she’s “excited” for fans to hear the collaboration.
Now, the question is, what would a country-fied version of The Horses sound like? This song is embedded in Australian culture – one that everybody knows and sings along to at the pub or when Harry Styles brings out the man himself on stage.
While Braithwaite hasn’t commented on the new collaboration just yet, we’re looking forward to hopefully seeing his reaction on Friday.
Home Free, Amy Sheppard and Travis Collins’ team-up was teased by Home Free back in April. The American acapella group, visiting Australia for CMC Rocks Queensland, told Studio 10’s Tristan MacManus and Angela Bishop they had worked with the Aussie pair.
Band member Tim Foust divulged the news: “We’ve got a new collaboration coming out with Amy Sheppard and Travis Collins, a couple of our favourite Aussie country artists, and we can’t wait for that to happen.”
Home Free, Amy Sheppard and Travis Collins’ take on The Horses is out now. Retaining the original melody, the chorus overflows with gorgeous harmonies. Each member gets to enjoy their own moment to shine on this cover, and that bridge? It’s almost like The Horses was always destined to be a country song. You can listen to the track below before the music video premieres tomorrow at 8 am AEST.
